Very Sorry for my Absence

 Heyyyyy!!

I know. Long time, no post. 

I've been very busy writing for an album I hope to release sometime in the future. I've written 8 songs so far, and it's been quite a ride. Two songs per day. I don't know know how many songs I'm going to write. Lately, it's been a passion I can't turn off. 

The album that I hope to release will be of many many influences. Influences including: TOOL, Pink Floyd, Maroon 5's debut album Songs About Jane, Phil Collins, Stone Temple Pilots, Collective Soul, the song The Downtown Lights by the Blue Nile, and Depeche Mode to name a few. There might be a Julee Cruise-isque influence as well, to add a hint of Lynchian vibes.

What has urged me to write an album is.... I've been touched hard by someone in particular who I thought was someone who I could count on in so many ways. They ditched me, and the friends that I shared with him, and it's not been pretty since. Songwriting about it has kept me cool for the past few days, and I've been trying to find a way to proper recover for almost two months (it's THAT bad). Though not every song is about them on the album, they each touch on a very overwhelming event that has recently went down.

My lyrics have been told to be dark, sometimes cold, and even deep to the point that the pain is so apparent can make an impression on audiences, especially if the music done experimentally with a fresh sound. I have been told by someone who is working with me on music choices, preferences, etc. that I'm advanced on my formatting, breaking the songwriting rules and somehow still making it all work. So I'm very pleased with that, and am looking forward to any further progress.

And to say more, a dear friend by the name of Sheila Victoria Anne (aka professionally Sheilava) has agreed to stand as my main vocalist. She's an amazing singer/songwriter/actress and I feel she'll understand all the feelings that I've written in my songs in a way that is somewhat compatible if we haven't shared the same experience. We've both had our downs and we've certainly have our admirations for each other. 

The album will be released on YouTube, Internet Archives, and maybe other online platforms, and later will be released in CD, vinyl, cassettes, etc. in the future after that. Will be a fun ride worth exploring and learning. 

So, forgive me if I've been MIA with this blog. I actually just recently finished watching The Return and might cook up another article either the end of this week or the next, depending on my writing habits. But I hope and wish everyone who are still checking this blog out healthy and well, and to keep on rockin'!!

Twin Peaks [the Original Series]: Everyone Is A Slave To Love

Long time, no articles here. I know. It's been a wild few weeks for me, and things might be looking up for my future if I keep to it. I won't get into the details, since this isn't what this article is about and is also filled with personal matters that shouldn't be exposed. I'm a private person, as few of you close to me who read this article know, so hopefully there'll be no hard feelings if I don't share any updates.

And besides, who cares about me when this is a blog specifically for all things Twin Peaks, David Lynch, and his other amazing cinematic masterpieces, whether in film, television, or art? LOL

Slave to Love by Bryan Ferry... A song I've been listening to lately and can't help but think about the original series of Twin Peaks. So many cross-over lovers in the show that give it the soap opera vibes. We have Laura Palmer with her loving/manipulating grasp on most of the men we're acquainted with: Bobby Briggs, James Hurley, Ben Horne, Leo Johnson, and possibly Dr. Jacoby. There could've been more lovers we're not aware of on Laura's part, but we all know she's the one with the most conquests than the women in the show.

We have Ed Hurley with Norma Jennings when he's still married to Nadine Hurley. And when Nadine has memory loss and her brain has reverted to that of a high school girl, Ed takes full advantage of it to get with Norma. Selfish, it does so seem, but this is love in its most powerful way of blinding one or two people to their desires. It ends abruptly when the consequences catch up with them when Nadine has her memories all restored and Ed takes her back.

James Hurley is another victim of being a slave to love as well, including Donna Hayward. James was in love with Laura, but during his time with Laura, he was falling for Donna, and Donna was feeling the same for him. In the middle of something James thought was 'perfect', he finds another love right there in front of him all that time but tries to avoid it... until Laura dies. Seems pretty quickly he went running to Donna to cope with his sorrow, and Donna fell right into it with the same feelings and desires. And when Maddie, the look-alike cousin of Laura, dies, he blames himself and tears himself away from Donna and Twin Peaks as a whole. And when he's at the Marsh residence, he's all high on the love for Evelyn Marsh, the lady of the house. How quickly he is so susceptible to love over and over again, and each time resulting in something that haunts him and also brutally affects the lives of others.

As for Donna... she's just a girl in a dark patch in her life and was susceptible to it from being exposed to Laura's dark side. She probably thought James would keep her in the light after her friend's death. It did help, quite well actually, until Maddie came into town and caused James to almost ruin his relationship with Donna by becoming romantically drawn to Maddie. It was as if a reminder of Laura that caused more harm than good. Especially after she died at the hands of the same killer as her cousin.

Shelly Johnson's weakness in love all started with her relationship with Leo Johnson. As we all know, Leo was a nice and sweet guy before he married her, and afterward, treated her abusively and had her as if she was a maid he didn't have to pay. Shelly was deceived by the nature of a man she thought she loved, which is another thing about love: it can have the power of deception. She falls for Bobby Briggs, but this too starts out like a dream-come-true, the white knight fairy tale, she thinks of him until he starts thinking highly of himself with getting a bigger job by working with Ben Horne. He becomes so self-absorbed in his desire to gain power and begins shooing Shelly to the side as if unimportant to his goals... even though he thinks he's doing all this for her and not thinking of Shelly as more important than seeking a prestigious wealthy image. 

Though Bobby Briggs is only a slave to love when it comes to Laura Palmer, he only becomes a slave to power and higher status. He doesn't qualify much for it, but he's still someone to consider for being involved with the greatest manipulator of the female spirit in the town of Twin Peaks.

We can not forget about Ben Horne. In the beginning, he's this guy we all know is bad business... and a slime-bag when it comes to young beautiful women. Laura was one of his loves and even displayed that love and fondness for her quite well. Even his daughter Audrey couldn't avoid noticing it with Laura's pictures in his office. At the end of the series, he is revealed to be the past lover of Eileen Hayward, who is no other than Donna's mother. The transformation he is willing to study and undertake to be a better self causes him to suddenly desire the woman he loved truly in the past, although she was married. Their relationship resulted in Donna's birth. A secret that was well-kept to the very end, due to Ben's desire to reveal the hardest truth by John Justice Wheeler's advice to ascend to become a better person. But instead of it doing good, it only made things worse. It ruined the relationship of the Hayward Family and might've done the same with the Horne Family. Love wouldn't seem much part of this explosion of events, but deep down inside, it is the seed that brought it all about. Without the birth of Donna, it would not have happened. Without love, Donna wouldn't have ever existed.

Audrey Horne... a girl with unrealistic desires and dreams, yet still captivates the power of love by the horns at its strongest. We'd think it would've been Laura, but really, Audrey is so naive that she is somehow the most susceptible to Love as a whole. And yet, she rises like a phoenix from the ashes after her realization that she could never capture Agent Dale Cooper's love and heart as much as she would like. After so much persistence to do so by helping him with his case, even risking her own life within the walls of One-Eyed Jacks, she ends her falling for a childhood friend John Justice Wheeler, who knew her father and worked for him and her father gave him an open opportunity to exceed in his aspirations of business. Her affair with him is cut short when John has to leave for Brazil to be the replacement for a friend who was murdered. Audrey's love still glows for him, no matter where he is and how long they'll be apart. Unlike the other women in the series, she strongly recovers hopes for the best in life and knows that love never ends when one has to leave, despite knowing when they'll return.

Special F.B.I. Agent Dale Bartholomew Cooper is probably the leading man being the slave to love. In the book My Life, My Tapes, we are revealed his conflict with the powers of love since his school years and college, way before his acquaintance with Caroline Earle, the wife of his agent partner Windom Earle. For those who haven't read the book, it's a must-read. It features all his tapes since Day 1 when he got the tape recorder as a gift from his father. Throughout the book, the loves he pursues are undeniably troublesome on Cooper's part, and we know he's a massive slave to the love he wants so much for a woman... or in fact proof of his lustful desires. When he got with a married woman, Caroline (just like James did with Evelyn Marsh), it was already doomed to the outcome that consequentially emerged. He loved her, indeed, but her death affected him so much that he refused to romantically attach himself to any woman who was attached to the cases he undertook. In his logic gained from this devastating experience, love led to death when they were too close to his profession. When he met Annie Blackburn, it was somewhat of a revelation to love to him... or lust once again. He fell too quickly for it to be love, as he did in the past before Caroline, but that could be just me. As from what was discussed in the book of his tapes, it seemed to me that Cooper was subconsciously revisiting his failures once again with Annie by falling into lust, but only this time leading him to the trap that would have him enclosed from our world for 25 years. Love or its sister Lust snared his heart, mind, and soul, and gave him nothing more than blindness to his passion to save everyone he loves and cares for.

BOB would be a slave to love as well, despite being only a merciless entity of the Black Lodge. His fondness and obsession with Laura Palmer is actually something to marvel at... at the same time being utterly shocking and terrifying. BOB doesn't know how to love, but he knows how it feels. And his love for Laura was so overpowering, that he wanted to be her... like an obsessed stalker in the movies wanting to be their attractive victim by taking their skins and wearing them. It's a sick and gross thought, truly, but Love has its extremes. We could assume that BOB had only lust for Laura's intoxicating prowess, but he had abusively loved her since she was 13 when she became a woman upon receiving her monthly cycle. This would seem strange... her essence of luring men upon puberty... her pubescent scent winning over BOB more than any human man in existence.

Beautiful, leading you into both the wonderful and strange behind the red curtains of the mind. Like Chrystabell and Julee Cruise, Lady K graces us with her voice through the sycamore trees. We feel the dreaminess and the reminiscence of the iconic TV series within every word and every melodic note. They are currently on tour and have a new release called Burning The Sky.

A Twin Peak-isque Band - Attempt #418

A great band partly inspired by the iconic TV series Twin Peaks. It is made up of a duo by the names of Eira and Meraz. Their debut album, Examination, was released in 2022 and it is a great 33 minutes of Twin Peak-isque vibes, especially in track #7 called V Ad Mortem Minor. Very lovely and filled with great reminiscence. Indulge deep into the melodies and enjoy the ride to the deeper depths of imagination.

One verse in the song of John Lennon's Imagine strikes me the most every time I hear it. 

You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one

I hope someday you'll join us

And the world will be as one

We live inside a dream... the words both Philip Jeffries and Agent Cooper state in Twin Peaks. The reason I mention this song in particular in terms of Twin Peaks is because... peace seems to be only viewed in the eyes of a dreamer as Lennon has written. There is no peace in this world, and Agent Cooper and Dr. Albert Rosenfield have their beliefs firmly in peace due to their religions - Cooper in Tibetan Buddhism and Albert in Hinduism. 

Unfortunately, the words, We Live Inside A Dream, seem to resemble our world as a horrific nightmare. War, hunger, pain, suffering, and death plague every town, city, and country, and no matter how hard we work to end it once and for all, they never stop. 

If we all live inside this dream, why? 

And, if we woke up from this dream, would Lennon's Imagine be on the other side?

If we dream about world peace and goodwill, would we have the power to create our own dream universe where others live in a better world?

It is clear in Buddhism (Cooper's religion) that dreams can be shared by more than one person at the same time. Since Buddhism is all about peace and good living, I don't see us all living in a dream as horrid as it is today. And why Judy and BOB have to exist to cause harm and feed off of our pain and suffering.

But if we're not dreaming the same dream together, who is dreaming of this world and us as its characters? Many say it's Cooper as he's in the Black Lodge. There is some backing to it as he claimed to have connections with that of the Dalai Llama. As to whether he was dreaming in the Black Lodge, it would seem unlikely due to what we saw in Twin Peaks: The Return (but I'm open to any theories that support the thought). 

Then, there is the theory that we all live in our own dreams. Cooper's dream could've been what happened in The Return. Same with Audrey Horne during and outside her coma.

Others say it's David Lynch himself. His view of the world, and BOB and Judy could just be our punishers to feed off of our flaws and weaknesses as an evolving species. It was from war that Judy and BOB arose, thanks to the U.S.'s creation and launch of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Though Twin Peaks could be against the U.S. for developing the atomic bomb, I believe it is against the flaw of all humanity - its flaw of desire for war. And it is this very flaw that gave rise to something much darker and crueler than the shadow self of humanity itself. Yes, it was the U.S.'s fault for such a monstrous creation, but it is humanity's fault as a whole that brought about such outcomes, thanks to the passion for war and hatred.

Lennon's song Imagine shines so much thought as to what dreams could be and how they could impact Twin Peaks if it were a possible outcome. To imagine and dream of a world of peace, where there is no suffering, no war, no hate. Just a world of love, freedom, peace, and a happy union for all humanity. If we could dream that for those in our dreams, we have blessed them. But if our Dreamer is an outsider, we are forever trapped and doomed to dwell in this horrific world of a nightmare.

Further Study of Joni Mitchell's Roses Blue

In my previous article Why The Blue Rose? this 1969 song by Joni Mitchell is about the occult. Though I wanted to discuss my study of this song in that article, I decided to have it written separately so that it would have an importance of its own.

This song, to me, speaks of our very own Laura Palmer. She's a woman who cries and has a trembling heart in private. This is due to the pain she has secretly endured in her life. The sexual assault caused by BOB as he was within her father, Leland, put some much trauma into her, the only feelings she has within her that are true are her sadness and outrage. 

She has devotions to her own vices of drugs, sex, and prostitution. She lured her friend Donna briefly to the same dark path as we saw in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me when they arrived at the bar across the Canadian border with the men there.

The evil Laura plays games at the Black Lodge and makes Agent Cooper seem like a martyr, trapping him for 25 years. He bartered himself to the Lodge to save Annie. Something he had to do but in another way, shouldn't have. This sacrifice was evil Laura's victory against him, though a worthy sacrifice to his white knight syndrome. 

Her sorrow lured everyone she knew and loved in Twin Peaks, causing all the stress and sorrow to burden their everyday lives. Harold Smith, who wrote her secret diary, was the one who knew of her secrets and was lured to swim with pity for her. He was deeply affected by her death, as everyone else, but I believe his sorrow was much deeper, due to his connection with Laura and her diary. He couldn't get her out of his mind and her voice did indeed haunt him in his memories and even dreams. Just as much as her diary would if it were stolen. With this,  he was led to his own death by suicide. Also, her death leads to the craziness of her parents, even leading her mother Sarah into a deep depression. 

The second to last verse mentions 'the arm'. To solitary truth, don't ask how to think. David Lynch was adamant that we should never ask him or anyone how to think of Twin Peaks and his other cinematic works, because not even he knows. The truth could be anything we think of, or every truth could be the right answer in its own way. Though this doesn't have much to do with Laura Palmer, I believe that however we think of her could be our own simple truth. Same with other aspects of the series and films.

Depeche Mode: The Lost Band of the Lynch-verse

There are many bands whose music I wished David Lynch would've added to Twin Peaks: The Return and his other films. The one band I thought would've been an immediate choice for David Lynch is none other than Depeche Mode. They have the underground and dark mystique that would fit perfectly with the atmosphere of his cinematic genius, and they are one of Kyle MacLachlan's favorite bands. 

Their most recent album Memento Mori has so much that would be awesome if Lynch is making his next film, especially the songs Caroline's Monkey, My Cosmos Is Mine, Don't Say You Love Me, and My Favorite Stranger. It's a full-blown masterpiece of darkness and death. It stands right next to their 1990 album Violator... an album which I also think would've been awesome to be featured in The Return or even Lost Highway and Wild At Heart (Personal Jesus to be perfect for Wild At Heart in terms of Sailor and Lula). 

The haunting lead vocals of Dave Gahan could carry us to the depths of Lynch's pathways of surrealism, further pulling us into the darkness and mystique. Though I do listen to their music with Lynchian gusto, despite their music never being in a Lynch film, I embrace them as if they are part of that Universe I cherish so deeply. Every time a song by them comes on the radio or Spotify, I think of the missed opportunity Lynch made that could've been another big sound to his work.

May Depeche Mode keep their music alive with the darkness. Through the darkness, the mystery will always wander and ensnare us all forever in its fateful grasp.

The Music of TWIN PEAKS and the LYNCHIAN UNIVERSE

The music of Twin Peaks and David Lynch's other masterpieces have been in every Twin Peaks/David Lynch fan's heart and soul since the very beginning. It's the fire that walks with us throughout our lives once we experience it. The many composer geniuses, including the late Angelo Badalamenti, gave us something that's out of this world... as out of this world as the legacy of Twin Peaks, every David Lynch film, and surrealism as a whole. 

Audrey said it best to Donna at the Double R Dinner: 

"Isn't it too dreamy?" 

It really truly is, and fortunately, she isn't the only one who thinks so, especially the Little Man in the Red Room. 

We, the audience, relish the music's dream-like melodies. Whether they be upbeat, sad, lonely, romantic, mysterious, or terrifying. They are the soundtrack within us... the soundtrack of understanding human love, suffering, and fear. Nothing will ever compare to the music of Angelo Badalamenti. His creative bond with Lynch provided us with the greatest gift of all, starting with Blue Velvet revealing within us the hidden darkness in our souls and minds, and then waltzing into Twin Peaks with the song of a girl running through the dark woods, fearing for her life, approaching us, and slowly, very slowly leaving us into darkness... (Theme of Laura Palmer).

Sometimes, I feel like the music could be used by Lynch as secret codes to the abstractions behind his storytelling. Agent Cooper once made an intriguing point about using dreams as the special agents' way to solve cases. Cracking the code within them to eventually reveal the answer. That's how I perceive music within the Lynchian Universe. As dreams for their dream-like qualities. They affect our brainwaves in some way that they always stick with us as if they have some meaning beyond our comprehension (similar to dreams).  To me, the music is the red curtain we must go through to enter the Black Lodge of our minds and discover what was there all along. Within Twin Peaks and every David Lynch film, the music could lead to significant clues. Perhaps the formula of Transcendental meditation and the music could lead to a further extent in going further into the depths of our minds to grasp the aspects of surrealism and the mind of David Lynch. 

Right after I started the Facebook group called Twin Peaks... From Another Place back in February of last year, I began writing The Birdwatcher. This is the prequel story to the Twin Peaks: Chasing A Blue Rose series, and it is based somewhere amid Season 2. In this story arose another character... a character that would help pave the way through the events that might've occurred after the season ended. Special F.B.I. Agent Cheryl J. Preslocke emerged from the subconscious of the mind. A strange human being who connects herself with nature - in particular, birds - and watches over Ghostwood Forest and its neighboring town. This character was created by the songs: The Nightingale and The Love Theme of Twin Peaks. Of our beloved Twin Peaks, she is the nightingale and is one who always loves a certain character (not going to spoil it for those who haven't read the stories). Love is always on her side and fighting for love against evil is her main strength as much as it is her worst downfall - similar to that of Cooper. 

Without the music, this new storyline would've never been created to continue Twin Peaks from where it ended back in 1991. I believe the mission I've undertaken to expand and hopefully satisfy readers all over the world is well-sourced by the music of the one and only Angelo Badalamenti. I give him full credit, despite the show being entirely Lynch and Frost's brainchild. The music leads me to a dream-like state and, with that, lets me unleash the stories we've all wished (or not) could've happened.

The music could unfold the answers we've all been missing. To decipher it deeply with an open, peaceful mind could be the dreams we were all meant to decipher.
