This article has SPOILERS. If you haven't seen Twin Peaks: The Return, don't read this. If you have, then keep on scrolling. :)
I bet most wonder why would Cooper say those very words. Yes, it would've saved Laura Palmer from being killed by the notorious BOB and also the town of Twin Peaks from the bitter sorrow it endured, but... what would she have turned out to be if BOB really did possess her? And also, why was Laura Palmer so special to him?
We all know Laura was sexually abused by BOB in the form of her father, Leland. Since BOB fed off of her terror, it would seem he was only treating her like any other girl he had done the same with. But Laura... something was special about Laura that he couldn't resist. He wanted to be inside, see the world through her eyes, and possibly cause more havoc than ever. As to what made her special, we'll never know... Although I do have that theory I mentioned in my previous article, DEMIURGES & ARCHONS: Are They The Entities Of David Lynch? that's worth a thought.
If Laura Palmer was the child of BOB and Judy in the form of Leland and Sarah Palmer, perhaps she would be an anti-Christ-like being. A being that would be more powerful than all entities, especially with her ways of seduction and vices. BOB could've wanted that power for himself, and taken over the world as a female. But if he was for this, why wasn't Judy? We would think that both would be hyped to take over such a force. Others theorize Judy didn't appear within Sarah Palmer until after grief and depression struck her. But then, in Twin Peaks: The Return Episode 8, we see what could be Sarah Palmer lying in bed and a toad enters her mouth as she's asleep. This toad could be Judy, and since in Native American legends, some spirits turn into the form of the animals of the woods, this would be a possible theory. And since Leland Palmer was already possessed by BOB since he was a boy, this would make the pairing create Laura. Judy had found BOB or he found her.
But then... what if Laura was the Giant and Dido's offspring? It is also shown in Twin Peaks: The Return that, in the White Lodge, Dido carries a glowing orb with Laura's picture as the Prom Queen. In the same room, the Giant wears a father-like attire (which should've included a glass of Scotch or whiskey in hand). Could Laura Palmer be their child, tricking BOB and Judy into thinking she was their own, or were they just watching over her as if they were Zeus and Hera of Olympus? Did they destine her death for the better good? Once again, no one will ever know. The questions keep coming, and the theories keep cooking.
Now, if BOB possessed Laura Palmer, would it have been for the better of the Palmer family and the town of Twin Peaks? Would Agent Cooper's idea of her not taking the ring work? We could imagine Laura like Mr. C, Cooper's doppelganger possessed by BOB. Perhaps she'd be more lively on the outside, and dark on the inside like her father. She could've still manufactured that drug that brought out zombie-like vibes and become that millionaire Mr. C was in Vegas of The Return. Cooper, however, would still arrive in Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of Ronette Polanski, since she probably wouldn't have survived if BOB successfully possessed Laura. The murder mystery would've still landed on Laura, questioning, or a possible search party if she fled the town. Would Cooper still be on her tracks? Would he still be in Twin Peaks as long as he did, and soon become trapped in the Black Lodge? More questions. More mysteries that probably can't be solved.
Another assumption could be that BOB was bored being in a man's body and wanted to feel the woman's experience. The sex. The way of seeing things. The feeling of more power. As commonly themed in David Lynch's films and shows, women played a major role in something big to happen. BOB must've had plans for Laura if he was inside her. Yet again, why didn't he possess her as he had done to her father at a young age? For the many times he had sexually assaulted her, there were many opportunities of doing so.
Whatever the main purpose was for Laura in terms of BOB, I doubt it would've been to find Judy. But since he was cast out of Leland's body at the police station, he had no human jumpsuit to reside in. He was lost to the woods, more definitely in the form of a Great-Horned Owl until Cooper entered the Lodge to provide him his doppelganger. However, if he knew that Judy was within Sarah Palmer, he wouldn't need to 'find' her, which is what I find most confusing about The Return. If Sarah Palmer wasn't already possessed by Judy with the toad, then what was that about if Judy didn't possess her until after Laura's death? I would like to assume that Judy didn't manifest herself within Sarah until devastation struck, showing off her true colors as an entity within a human woman's body.
Twin Peaks as a whole is so many mysteries in one Universe that it is absolutely a joy to think of so many possibilities and ask so many questions through its entirety. Agent Cooper telling Laura 'not to take the ring' sparks much curiosity. Though many think that he still would've wound up in the Black Lodge in the end, I'm not too sure. But if that was the case, it would've been very interesting to know what happened 25 years later if BOB and Laura were living as one.
